A dangerous chase ensues across volcanos, jungles, deserts, and futuristic cities, as the Doctor and his companions struggle to prevent the Daleks' plans coming to fruition. The stakes are high, and for the first time in the programme's history the lives of two TARDIS travellers are lost....
Peter Purves (who played Steven in the story) narrates these thirteen episodes, only two of which survive in the television archives. Included is the special 'teaser', Mission To The Unknown, which was transmitted some weeks before the master plan itself was unleashed.
This story marks the first appearance, here playing space agent Bret Vyon, of Nicholas Courtney, who would later create the recurring role of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. Jean Marsh and Adrienne Hill also star as companions Sara Kingdom and Katarina.

This is one of the most fun and exciting of the early Doctor Who stories, not to mention the longest at 13 episodes. Its a shame it is lost in video form. One of the highlights, as the Doctor and his companions battle the Daleks across time and space, is episode six which is probably the first "Christmas special". Episode 7 is also something of a "New Years" special. In episode six the TARDIS accidently lands in a hollywood movie lot from the early 1900's where Valentino's "The Shiek" and a Charlie Chaplin film, among others, are being recorded. The Doctor and crew get sucked into the various movie plots without having a clue as to what is really going on. In one scene they violently come to the rescue of a damsel in distress who is being tied to the railroad tracks-much to the consternation of the damsel. At the end of the episode the Doctor and cast turn to the audience and wish us a Merry Christmas. William Hartnell began as a comic actor and here he is at his best.
This is worth a listen even though it will take some effort to stick with. Younger Doctor Who fans might not be too interested but if they can appreciate a good story from when the concept of Doctor Who was still new, they should give this a try.
The story revolves around the Daleks making a deal with, basically a high level politician, to obtain an element to conquer the galaxy. What makes this so memorable is how tragic a story it is. If there is one story that brings home the damage the Daleks are capable of, and the lasting terror they inflict on the Doctors to follow the First this is the one.
This story follows The Myth Makers and precedes The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve. This is a very good period of Doctor Whom in terms of the scripts. I feel the writers really got a grasp of what this Series is about by this 3rd season.
